Course at a glance
Students will learn how to plan and monitor animal feeding as well as learn how to maintain animal health, welfare and accommodation. The course themes include planning and monitoring animal feeding, maintaining animal health, biology, welfare and accommodation, animal handling and grooming. There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the Animal Unit and work related experience. Students' work is assessed continually throughout the course.

at grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) or above to include two from English, Maths and Science, with at least a grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Key Information
Students wishing to undertake this course are expected to be willing to work hard on the stable yard and be enthusiastic to learn about horse care. Physical activity, therefore, forms a large part of the course. You will be expected to be hardworking and ‘hands on’ in both the practical and academic aspects of the course.

Please note: for rider safety and welfare reasons, the College has a maximum weight limit for riders of 13 ½ stone
Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress onto a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management.

Progression and Development Sessions
All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.
Students are required to find their own work placement where a minimum of 150 work placement hours must be completed. Work experience forms part of the study programme and it is not possible to compete the programme without it.
Support from the college is available to aid students in finding a suitable placement but we encourage students to find suitable placements before they commence their study programmes. All placements are Health and Safety checked prior to students commencing work experience.
So that you are as prepared as you can be for your course, here are a few reminders about PPE (personal protective equipment) you will need:
Riding hat- to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards
Hairnet
Gloves – dark coloured, to be be worn whilst leading and riding
Long riding/Jodhpur boots – must be clean, chaps must be black or brown colour
Tops- Askham Bryan College tops where possible, alternatively, dark coloured sweatshirts, polo shirt and coats. No hooded tops.
Body protector – to current BHS (2018) and BETA guide safety standards
