Arboriculture & Forestry
A career that is literally “a cut above the rest”
Arboriculture is a developing industry with international possibilities for those who can aspire to the high skills required. It demands focussed highly motivated individuals to perform specialised tasks as part of a team.
Arboriculture is a highly technical and competitive industry where practitioners use a wide range of specialised skills, tools and equipment to access trees to perform pruning operations, tree removals in tight spaces, stump removal, planting and maintenance.
All training at Askham Bryan is realistic in order to prepare individuals for a demanding industry. Practical training is enhanced by science based studies in order to give the developing arborist a wide range of knowledge and skills, essential to becoming a credible and successful practitioner.
The courses offer a range of other vital skills such as tree/plant identification, pest and disease identification, survey and inspection skills and a broad knowledge of health and safety laws.
Arboriculture is the ultimate challenge for those wanting an exciting, varied and fulfilling career. It is not for the faint-hearted, but if you want to join the elite come to Askham Bryan College.
At York we offer courses that specialise in Arboriculture, which is the science and practice of producing and managing trees and shrubs in both urban and rural locations. To support learning we have extensive facilities including a fantastic arboretum and many specimen trees on campus in addition to a woodland garden and native woodlands. We also have excellent laboratory facilities, maintenance workshops and specialist industry equipment. The forestry and arboriculture industries are closely related to the leisure and amenity sectors. Health and safety is therefore crucial to protect the public from the potential hazards associated with trees and because of this every local authority has dedicated tree officers and arboriculturists. There are also good opportunities to work abroad or set up your own business once you have the necessary experience.
