  • Safe Handling of Animal Medicines

  • Following the introduction of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2006,
    enrolments of new SQP (Suitably Qualified Person) are now being accepted by
    AMTRA. Many people will find it to their benefit to undertake a course of study to help them to succeed in the AMTRA examination. This course is designed to
    prepare participants for the examinations which comprise:
    • The Base Module
    • The Farm Animal Module
    • The Equine Module
    • The Companion Animal Module
    Merchant SQP (R-SQP)
    For this qualification you need to succeed in all four modules plus an oral test and project.
    Saddler SQP (e-SQP)
    For this qualification you need to succeed in the Base Module, Equine and

  • NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe use of Veterinary Medicines


    A one day course ( plus assessment on a further date). On successful completion of the assessments you will
    be certificated as being able to:
    • Comply with current, relevant health and safety legislation
    • Follow an animal health management plan
    • Administer a range of veterinary medicine types, safely and humanely
    • Store and transport veterinary medicines correctly
    • Maintain the health of user, public and animals
    • Dispose of unwanted veterinary medicines safely
    • Record the use of veterinary medicines
    • Prevent unnecessary pain and distress to animals
    • Identify signs of health and ill-health in animals
  • NPTC c of c in the Safe Use of Sheep Dips

    A one day course (plus attendance on a second date for the dip side test). The computer based assessments should take place following the training.
    This course is designed for farmers and their staff who require certification by the NPTC for the purchase and supply of these chemicals. On the successful
    completion of the assessments candidates will be certificated as being able to:
    • Use a sheep dip manufacturer’s label/data sheet for reference
    • Undertake an assessment of available sheep dip facilities and their operation to the agreed standards
    • Operate within and comply with the relevant legislative, welfare and environmental requirements
    • Select and wear PPE for the tasks required
    • Complete essential records accurately
    • State the knowledge that underpins the understanding of the control of common external parasites
    • State the knowledge that underpins the understanding and responsibilities of sheep diseases, use and disposal

Beef, Lamb and Pork Butchery


These one day courses (College Certificate of Attendance) cover traditional butchery skills including: breaking down the carcase into primal cuts; breaking down primals into saleable cuts; display of meat joints, mincing, boning and rolling; slicing and dicing

Game Butchery

A one day course including plucking and evisceration, cutting and preparing useable cuts, boning, filleting and display for sale. The course can include birds, rabbit and deer.

A one day course including working with turkey, chicken, duck and pheasant. Learn how to cut and prepare useable cuts, boning, filleting and display for sale.

Sausage Making


A one day course including breaking down primal cuts of meat to form ingredients, following a recipe to add seasonings etc (usually pork or beef), mincing, mixing and filling sausage casings, linking and presentation for sale.

Emergency First Aid at Work


A one day course for those who need a basic knowledge of first aid. It is suitable for smaller workplaces or organisations where a nominated person is required to take charge in the event of accident or illness.

CIEH Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace


A one day course which provides an overall grounding in basic health & safety issues and is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). It includes:

CIEH Level 3 Award in Training Skills and Practice (TSP) "Train the Trainer"


This three day course is for those who want to develop practical training skills and is the minimum requirement (other conditions also apply) for anyone wishing to register to deliver CIEH qualifications in food safety, health and safety and environmental protection without public funding, eg in the workplace. It is also ideal for firsttime trainers who need to understand the basics of training skills and practice or those looking to refine their techniques. It encourages a flexible approach to training delivery that takes account of learners’ needs and preferences.
The CIEH TSP covers initial assessment, planning and preparation, training delivery, assessment and evaluation and is part of the CIEH Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Manual Handling: NPTC


This is a half day course (plus assessment arranged through the NPTC) covering manual handling and is designed to help candidates and employers comply with legislative requirements.

Safe Working In Agriculture: NPTC Level 2 Award


This course involves three 3-hour sessions and is suitable for anyone employed or working in the land based industries. It includes looking at good practice, risk assessment, safe working and legislation.

Controlling Risks to Health and Safety in Agriculture: NPTC Level 3 Award


This course involves thirteen 3-hour sessions and is essential for anyone managing or employing staff within the land-based Industries. It includes looking at good practice, risk assessment, safe working and legislation.

Horticulture Short Courses

Automatic Turf Irrigation Systems: NPTC Level 3

This one week course (Monday-Friday, including an exam on day 5) is an accredited, professional qualification that will enable users and managers to obtain the  knowledge and information they require to operate their automatic irrigation systems more efficiently.

NPTC Brushcutter Training

Training takes one day. You will need to attend at a further date to undertake a short assessment organised through the NPTC. The course is designed for petrol engined machines with a range of attachments for operation in grass and light brushwood areas. It includes: machine maintenance; operator safety; attachments and operational procedures.

Grounds Maintenance Risk Assessment

This one day course will increase your awareness of the risks associated with hazards encountered in the grounds maintenance business. You will learn how risk assessments work, how to identify potential dangers to yourself and others and your responsibilities in dealing with potential hazards.
Candidates will undertake a short multiple choice test at the end of the course to review their understanding of the issues addressed during the course.

Safe Use of Hedge Trimmers: NPTC Certificate of Competence

A one day course plus assessment on a second day. This course is suitable for those working with hand held hedge trimmers who wish to update their skills and/or satisfy Health and Safety legislation regarding the safe use of hand held hedge trimmers at work. The training leads to candidates taking their NPTC assessments on a further date.
The assessment is in two parts: pre-use safety, plus operating hand held powered hedge trimmers. On the successful assessment of these units your certificate will be endorsed as ‘Hand Held Powered Hedge Trimmer.’
This course can also be delivered for Tractor Mounted Hedge Trimmers &
Tractor Mounted Verge Mowers – please contact us for further information on these options.

Ride On Mowers: NPTC Certificate

This course comprises one day of training. You then need to attend on a further day for an independent assessment organised through the National Proficiency Test Council. The training covers the basic knowledge needed to use these machines safely.

Basic Paving

This two day course is for beginners and covers slabs to flags, how to lay them correctly from groundwork to the final product.
(Also at Guisborough).

Block Paving – Advanced

Choose from a one or two day course covering more advanced techniques.

Sustainable Drainage Systems

This two day course includes the installation of drainage systems which are sustainable and meet the requirements of new legislation.

Chainsaws and Tree Work

NPTC Chainsaw Training


A range of courses on chainsaw operation to help you gain new skills and update existing ones. NPTC certificated chainsaw courses are suitable for those seeking contractual work in professional forestry, amenity or arboricultural activities.

NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw and Related Operations (QCF)


CS30: Prepare and Maintain the Chainsaw


This course involves two days training plus a further day for your NPTC assessment. It is designed for those with little or no experience of chainsaws, who intend to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities.

CS31: Fell & Process Small Trees


CS30 is a pre-requisite. This course
involves three days of training plus a further day for your NPTC assessment.
This course is designed for those with little or no experience of chainsaws, who intend to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities.
It is suitable for those seeking contractual work in professional forestry, amenity or arboricultural activities which is likely, immediately or at some future date, to involve felling trees over 200 mm (15") in diameter and aerial tree work.

CS30: Prepare and Maintain the Chainsaw and CS31: Fell & Process Small Trees


Four days of training plus one day for assessment. Please note this intensive session is only recommended for experienced operators.

CS32: Fell and Process Trees over 380mm


CS30 is a pre-requisite. The course involves three days of training plus a further day for your NPTC assessment.

CS38: Climb Trees & Perform Aerial Rescue


There are five days of training plus assessments on a sixth day. This course is designed for those wanting to be able to climb trees in the course of their work, although it is not suitable for anyone who suffers from vertigo! This qualification does not involve the use of the chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirements for a ground person working with a climber and will enable successful candidates to go on to take CS39, CS40 & CS41.

CS39: Use of a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness


CS30, 31 and 38 are pre-requisites.
There are three days of training with assessments on a fourth day. This course covers the use of the chainsaw in the tree to carry out a range of cutting techniques.

CS48: Powered Pole Pruners


This is a one day training course with assessments on a second day. The course covers maintenance of the powered pole pruner, on-site preparation and basic pruning.

LANTRA Award Basic Tree Survey & Inspection


This one day course, developed in association with the Arboricultural Association, explains the principles of basic tree survey and inspection, so that trees with visible signs and symptoms that may lead to tree or limb failure can be identified and reported.

LANTRA Award Maintenance & Cross-cutting


This course comprises two days of integrated training and assessment. It is suitable for those who intend to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities, but does not extend to work in forestry or arboricultural activities or work on Forestry Commission land. It is suitable for those candidates who are only required to operate a chainsaw for cross-cutting.

LANTRA Award Maintenance, Cross-cutting & Fell Trees up to 200mm


This course comprises four days of integrated training and assessment. It is suitable for those who intend to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities, but does not extend to work in forestry or arboricultural activities or work on Forestry Commission land.

Stump Grinding Operations: NPTC Certificate of Competence


A one day course with assessment on a further date. This course is designed for anyone wishing to learn how to use a stump grinder and is designed to prepare candidates for their NPTC assessment. LANTRA certification can be arranged if this is preferred.
Subjects covered include carrying out daily and routine maintenance, operating the machine safely, replacing cutters in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions and preparing the machine for transportation.

Manually Fed Woodchipper Operations: NPTC Certificate of Competence


A one day course with assessment on a further date. This course is designed for those using this machine and leads to assessment through the National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC). This qualification is divided into three compulsory units:
1. Inspect and maintain the woodchipper
2. Prepare the woodchipper for operation
3. Operate the woodchipper

Pesticide Training


Each module comprises one day of training, plus separate assessment.

Foundation Module (PA1):


This compulsory module must be completed by all candidates before they proceed to any of the Applicator tests.
• Learn about the safe use of pesticides
• Handling and storage of chemicals
• Selection of correct protective clothing
• Interpretation of labels
• Environmental factors
• Legislation
• Application tests

Tractor Mounted Crop Sprayers (PA2a):


This module covers the use of a ground crop sprayer – boom type hydraulic nozzle and / or boom type rotary atomisers. The equipment included in this test module is any mounted or trailed ground crop sprayer as specified previously where the boom is designed to be used parallel to the ground only.

Hand Held Applicators e.g. Knapsack Sprayers (PA6a):


This module covers hand held applicators – hydraulic nozzle and / or rotary atomiser types. The equipment included in this test module is any hand held and / or pedestrian controlled sprayer of the type specified above.

LANTRA Award Vermin Control Courses:


These courses each comprise one day of integrated training and assessment.

Rabbit & Mole Control


Learn about the importance and biology of rabbits & moles, the legislation associated with rabbit and mole control, the use of fumigants, the use of physical methods of rabbit and mole control with a practical session to demonstrate gassing or practice gassing compound use.

Rodent Control


Learn about the reasons for controlling rodents, their biology and behaviour, current rodenticides and their safe use, storage and transport, and non chemical methods of control.

Safe use of Aluminium Phosphide


This half day course provides training in the use of aluminium phosphide used in the control of rabbits, rats and moles.

Vehicles & Machinery

NPTC Certificates of Competence/Safe Use


After the amount of training days specified please note that you will need to attend on a further day for each course for an independent assessment organised through the National Proficiency Test Council.

Abrasive Wheel Machines


A one day course (plus assessment day). Certification can also be organised through LANTRA if preferred.

All Terrain Vehicles


A one day course (plus assessment date) which is suitable for those who already use, or will be using, an All Terrain Vehicle for either business or recreational use.

Fork Lift Trucks: Rough Terrain Telescopic


A one day course (plus assessment date) designed for those with some previous experience of forklift truck operations. Total novices may require a longer course.

Forklift Truck (Industrial Counterbalance)


This qualification runs five times each year and comprises three consecutive days of training. It covers safe driving of a forklift truck, pre-use maintenance and safety checks, recognition of controls and instruments.

Plant Machinery: 360° digger


This course comprises two days of training (plus assessment date). During the course you will acquire the basic handling techniques of this important machine.
A further day of training course can be attended to cover the 180° digger (plus another assessment day).

Dumper


This is a one day course with assessment on a second day. It covers risk assessment, routine maintenance, inspection of the machine and safe operating.

Tractor Driving and Related Operations


This course comprises two days of training (plus assessment date) You will learn the basic handling techniques of this important machine with emphasis being placed on safety. Total novices may require a longer course.

Apprenticeships :  – Employers – get extra skills into your business  If you have an employee who could benefit from an Apprenticeship or if you could offer a work  placement for an Apprentice please contact us for more information.
Training is geared to the Apprentice understanding your processes and your equipment. Some assessment will take place on your premises but we would always arrange to visit at a time that’s best for the smooth operation of your business.

Train To Gain; Train to Gain is a government funded initiative aimed at up-skilling those already in employment to increase productivity, efficiency and profitability.
Training is delivered solely in the workplace and at times to suit the business and to minimise disruptions.
Training is available at level 2 and 3 and if your employee student has fewer than 5 GCSEs at grades A – C they could be eligible for free training subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

The education and training the Centre offers includes the unique BTec National Award in Beef Production – a level 3 qualification tailored to meet the needs of the beef production industry. This qualification can be studied on a part time basis over 1 or 2 years.
