The concept for the National Beef Training Centre at Askham Bryan College was developed between the College, Rose County Foods, Dungannon Meat and J Sainsbury’s all of whom were concerned over the lack of any centre or champion to provide guidance for a major national industry. The aim of the Centre is to provide full and part time courses for both new entrants to the industry and also for current practitioners and to improve the knowledge and skills of individuals working within the beef industry especially in practical areas relating to beef production, butchery techniques and management skills.
The Centre has been developed over the last 12 months at the College’s Westfield Farm and with both the rapid exit milking parlour and the Robotic milking machine offers unique training facilities for learners.
The National Beef Training Centre has been built to house up to 90 head of cattle, with a mixture of dairy crosses and traditional beef breeds to present students with the opportunity to study growth rates of the different breeds and sexes and to determine the cost of production of different animals reared indoors. The Centre comes complete with handling pens, cattle crush and weighing equipment to facilitate practical hands-on experience for the learners. To further enhance the training opportunity offered by the National Beef Training Centre the College has a purpose built meat cutting facility where butchery techniques can be developed.
A National Beef Training Centre Steering Committee has been created and has secured membership from the following National Organisations:
