How to Apply for a Further Education Course or an Apprenticeship

We have a Single Equality Policy and an Admissions Policy which aim to eliminate prejudice and promote applications and admissions from all sectors of the community. Click here to view the policy Single Equality Policy

If you think you may need special provision please contact us to discuss your needs and we will do our best to meet them. We welcome students with disabilities or special learning needs and are able to make reasonable adjustments to take individual learning needs into account. We ask that you let us know as early as possible in the application process if you think you have a disability or special learning need that we need to consider. Examples of needs we should be aware of could include specific conditions such as dyslexia, a hearing or sight disability or some form of physical mobility limitation. Perhaps you had extra support at school or at a previous college, or you may just need support for exams or assignments? We will discuss your individual circumstances with you in detail so that together we can identify the best courses of study for you.

Students with disabilities including dyslexia should contact their Local Education Authority (LEA) for advice on Disabled Student Allowances.

First Steps

Our friendly Central Admissions staff are on the other end of the telephone to take your enquiries. It is best to contact us as soon as possible if you are interested in studying at Askham Bryan College.

By making an enquiry you are not committed to coming to the College but it allows us to supply any further information you may need and to answer your queries. You and your parents or guardians are most welcome to visit Central Admissions to discuss any application issues. The office is open Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5.30pm (4.30pm on Friday).

Complete the Application Form

When you make an application you are still not committed to coming to the College but we can reserve your place subject to you meeting our entry requirements. Just complete the application form at the back of our Further Education Prospectus or contact us to request an application form. We will be happy to assist you if you need any further information.

Your Interview

We will acknowledge receipt of your application within one week and, usually, you will then be invited for an interview to discuss your requirements with a tutor.

You are welcome to bring guests along with you to an Interview Day which will include a tour around the campus and student accommodation. Interview Days provide you with an opportunity to find out more about the College, course details, finance issues and the support you can expect if you have learning difficulties and/or disabilities. It will also enable you to meet up with other students.

Interview Days are held throughout the year and we will write to you to confirm the  date of your interview.

Your Offer of a Place

Provided we have a course that will help you achieve your aims, we will then confirm our offer of a place to you. Some courses may have specific entry requirements you need to meet and therefore your place might be subject to you achieving certain grades in examinations or gaining particular work experience or a work placement.

After Exam Results

You should contact us as soon as possible after you have received your exam results. If you have not achieved the results for your preferred course, do not despair, as we will try to help you to find a place on an alternative course that will still help to lead to your career goal. If you have done better than anticipated it may be possible for you to start at the College on a more advanced course.

If you have any queries, please ring us on 01904 772211– we are here to help you.

In common with all Further Education Colleges, courses are run subject to there being a viable number of students. If any course does not run due to insufficient numbers, we will do our best to help you find an alternative.

If you accept an offer of a place on a course, a ‘Joining Pack’ containing all your enrolment paperwork, will be posted to you at the end of July.
