15 July at The Great Yorkshire Show Asda launched the Cattleman Academy. Asda are providing a bursary that allows four Advanced Apprentices from Askham Bryan College to spend time studying genetics, breeding and other techniques with Asda’s own-supply beef farms.

York Guns Ltd support College Principal Liz Philip by providing a Miroku shotgun for the year and six skeet vests. We anticipate there will be plenty of competition for places on the teams.

The NVQ in Trees & Timber is to be replaced by a new Work Based Diploma in Trees & Timber in September 2010. Askham Bryan is launching the new qualification by hosting our second Employer’s Day with representatives from eading employers in the area and a talk from our guest speaker Neil Hope-Collins from the Health and Safety Executive.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club has appointed Askham Bryan College as the training provider for its grounds staff. Yorkshire were keen to appoint an apprentice and came to the college for advice. After a rigorous interview process two candidates were chosen, Adam Matthews and Adam Cutmore.

Agriculture students at Askham Bryan College were hard at work in the glorious sunshine this weekend demonstrating their showing skills at the College’s annual Stockmanship competition.
The event included classes for sheep, dairy and beef with over 40 National Diploma students involved.

Congratulations to Aaron Hickman who has become North region’s Institute of Horticulture Young Horticulturist of the Year. Aaron came through a demanding round of heats before wining the North region final and beating over 1500 other entrants to qualify for the Grand Finals at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

On the 21st and 22nd of October, the ABC Animal Unit technicians and National Diploma students from both the York and Wakefield campuses put on a terrifying Halloween night – with ghost walks, ghost stories and tours of the specially decorated and lit unit to get a rare glimpse of the nocturnal animals housed there.
