Meet Professor John Ditch

{media1}Meet Professor John Ditch who has recently taken up his appointment as
Director of Higher Education at Askham Bryan College. John is a social
scientist and was until 2002 Professor of Social Policy at the University of
York, then Pro Vice-Chancellor (and Deputy Vice-Chancellor) at Northumbria
University. Most recently he was Head of Social Science at the University of
Aberdeen.
‘I hope that my knowledge of the education sector and experience as a senior
manager will complement the well known and much respected skills of other
colleagues at the college and will ensure that the College’s reputation for land
based training and education is further enhanced,’ he says.
‘I believe that there has never been a more exciting or important time to be
involved in land based education since the Second World War. Rising up the
political agenda are questions to do with food security, climate change,
carbon impact, cutting-edge science and crop production, the sustainability of
rural economies and the need for better understanding of the environment
more generally.
‘Askham Bryan College offers a broadly based portfolio of Higher Education
programmes based firmly on its traditions and expertise as a land based
college serving Yorkshire and the north of England. From ‘bite-size’ short
courses, through to Foundation and Honours degrees the College is seeking
to meet the needs of individuals and the wider economy and I very much
welcome the opportunity to be part of that development’ he adds.
