Askham Bryan College Awarded the Prestigious BHS Tarquin Award

Date: 9th December 2016

Askham Bryan College played host to a trial of self-closing bridleway gates conducted by the British Horse Society (BHS) and Natural England in 2015, they have now been awarded the Tarquin Trophy by the BHS.

In partnership with the NFU, CLA and other access organisations the college in 2015 played host to a trial of self-closing bridleway gates to try and find a gate that was not only safe for horse riders but also for those with disabilities that in addition, met the needs of landowners.

In November BHS held its annual awards at Saddler’s Hall, London in which it recognised the best of the equestrian world. Lynn Petersen, Chief Executive of the BHS said: “This is a special day, celebrating and recognising the incredible achievements of our wonderful volunteers. Their dedication to the BHS makes all the difference.”

At the awards Askham Bryan College was awarded the Tarquin Trophy which is awarded to organisations, business or business associates which have made a significant contribution to equestrian safety. At the bridleway gate trials the college supplied a large group of students and horses as well as providing cattle for the trial – the gates were also tested as to their effectiveness in containing livestock. The data collected will identify features that will be used to make it easier and safer for a wide range of users to enjoy the countryside. Awarding the college with this award was HRH the Princess Royal who is Patron of The Pony Club, President of both World Horse Welfare and the RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) and is Vice Patron of British Show jumping, alongside HRH the Princess Royal was BHS President, Martin Clunes.

Dr Tim Whitaker, Campus Principal of Askham Bryan College said: “It has been great to be involved in this practical collection of data and its statistical analysis, we hope the trial is able to benefit all in providing safer and more practical bridleway gates across the country.”
