Senior Appointment Announced for Askham Bryan College
Date: 27th February 2017
Sandra Burnhill joins York-based Askham Bryan College as Executive Director on 20 March.
A love of the countryside and the drive to inspire young people to achieve has led to a new appointment within the senior management team at Askham Bryan College.
Sandra Burnhill joins the York-based college on Monday 20 March as Executive Director, with responsibility for students, quality and standards. Mrs Burnhill has spent almost three decades in the education sector, most recently as Assistant Principal at Kirklees College in West Yorkshire.
Mrs Burnhill says she is looking forward to returning to her North Yorkshire roots. She was brought up near Pickering attending Lady Lumley's School, and where her parents Mr and Mrs John Harrison kept sheep and ran a small egg distribution business.
“I am delighted to be joining the team at Askham Bryan College. For a while now I have wanted to work with students learning about the land based sector, so it is literally returning to my agricultural roots,” she said. “I am looking forward to working with the Askham Bryan curriculum team, particularly with the challenges and opportunities which government reforms to apprenticeships offer.”
Mrs Burnhill has been Assistant Principal at Kirklees College since 2009, with responsibility for providing strategic direction, including in community learning and apprenticeships and for both quality and the college's curriculum. She was also manager for the Dewsbury campus working closely with the Leeds City Region LEP regarding a successful £15m capital bid.
After graduating and working as a police officer in West Yorkshire, Mrs Burnhill joined what was then Dewsbury College in 1989 as a lecturer in sport and public services, later becoming Head of Department and latterly Assistant Principal.
Her interest in sport continues, as well as in musical theatre. She enjoys running and keeping fit, and recently took part in a fund raising triathlon.
Her home is currently in Liversedge, West Yorkshire where she lives with her husband and two daughters.
