If you are under 18 years of age when you start a full-time course, you will need to study in College for a minimum of 21 hours per week.

We encourage all our students to make full use of all the education opportunities that are on offer at the College. In addition to the main qualification you choose to study, there are four other important aspects to the education you will receive from us.

Your full programme of study will consist of:

  1. The Main Course You Study. This is the course you are applying for, for example a National Diploma in Agriculture or a First Diploma in Animal Care with the Intermediate Skills Certificate. You will find details of these in the course information section below.
  2. Additional Studies. These are sometimes referred to as additionality. We offer a range of extra qulifications which any full-time student can take alongside their main course. These additional qualifications can vary from short courses lasting only a few weeks to those which last a full year. There are practical skill qualifications as well as GCSEs and AS Levels. The range of subjects varies from time to time (according to admission criteria and viable numbers) but practical qualifications have recently included chainsawing, pesticide application, sheep dips, environmental management, working with veterinary medicines, first aid at work and small machinery maintenance. GCSEs include English and Mathematics and AS Level subject choices include Biology and Environmental Sciences. Number Power and Word Power are also available.
  3. Key Skills Qualifications. All students in full-time education who are 16 years of age or over need to study the three skills of Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology. These key skills are integrated into assignments, and, on successful completion will gain students UCAS points towards University entrance.
  4. Extra Activities. These are known as 'enrichment' and normally take place on a Wednesday afternoon. This is your chance to get involved and try something different. The activities available each year vary but there's a wide range to choose from including team sports, community service, digital imaging, micropropagation, stable management, basic car maintenance and vehicle restoration.
  5. The Tutorial Programme. This involves both group work and one-to-one meetings with a designated tutor. The personal tutor monitors progress from induction to exit and is the key individual to whom students can refer for advice and guidance. They will be in regular contact with your parents or guardians if you are under 18 years of age and will make sure that your attendance and behaviour meet with the College's expectations.

As a mature student you may opt out of Additional Studies, Key Skills Workshops and Extra Activities. However, we advise all mature students to consider taking part in these activities to avoid missing out on valuable opportunities. Students over 18 who opt out of these elements and study for less than 16 hours per week are part-time students.
