Main features

This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge that can be applied to a wide range of animal management industries, particularly in the areas of animal conservation, health, welfare and science. There is emphasis on project work that concentrates of specific areas of individual interest. This degree is validated and awarded by Harper Adams University College.

Full time suidy involves college-based classes, usually for three days each week, with the remainder of the week as self study time. Part-time study involves infilling to the full time timetable and thus varies depending on the modules taken.

If you are successful on the course you could progress to postgraduate study at MSc or PhD level. Employment opportunities include management roles in conservation projects, animal collections, animal health and welfare industries.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and mathematics, or a BTEC First Diploma with a minimum of 20 points; plus a minimum of 220 UCAS points, which may include Key Skills at level 2 or above, and including study of 2 A levels to A2 level (equivalent to CCD grades), or a BTEC National Diploma; plus a satisfactory reference.

Equivalent qualifications may be considered. Mature students may be admitted by exceptional entry.

  • Advanced Parasitology
  • Ecology and Conservation
  • Managing Organisations
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Zoo and Wildlife Management

In the third year you will study:

  • Applied Animal Welfare
  • Behavioural Ecology
  • Biotechnology
  • An Investigational Project
  • Population Genetics
    plus a choice of two optional modules from a range of subjects such as:
  • Animal Ethics
  • Clinical Laboratory Techniques
  • Management of Animal Collections
  • Wildlife Management 

During the course you will be assessed through projects, practical work, essays, presentations and examinations.
