Main features

This course includes basic dog training using positive reinforcement aimed at creating a bond between handler and dog and giving an introduction to the way dogs learn.

These are practical sessions which are backed up with information sheets.

The exercises learnt must be practiced on a daily basis to gain the most benefit from the course.

After the course, you could consider moving on to Stage 2 Dog Training then Fun Agility.

The cost of the course is £50 (there is no fee remission on this course).

Entry requirements

You need a dog over the age of 6 months that has completed a full course of vaccinations (Please bring the vaccination certificate to the first class). We also need to know the breed (or the size and the possible cross), age, sex and whether your dog has been neutered.

Please note that check/choke chains are not acceptable.  Dogs should have a half check or flat collar with a lead to suit dog and handler. You will also need to bring small food rewards (max 1cm square; e.g. liver, cheese) and dog toys (preferably not squeaky toys for class!)

It is also useful for us to know if there are any specific problems (e.g. aggressive to other dogs, timid or any particular health problems).

What you will study

Basic pet obedience including: sit, down, stand, stay, recall, leave, and walking through doors/gates.

An insight into how the dog learns and help in correcting any problem behaviours the dog has developed.

Assesment

There are no exams. There will be a short informal test at the end of the course.
