Incorporating the National Award, the National Diploma in Horticulture is a great way to gain a good grounding in all aspects of horticulture. The course is run over 2 years and is made up of 18 different modules, all of which have been included to give you a broad spectrum of horticulture. The course has been redesigned for September 2009 so that you can choose to specialise and gain more in-depth knowledge of a particular sector. .

There are six core units that all students complete; these provide the essential knowledge and experience that you will need to a career in any sector of the industry. There are then eight other modules which have been chosen for their diversity, to give you a good knowledge of planting and maintenance. You then study four additional modules, depending on the area you want to specialise in.

You will also be able to gain valuable work experience in the Industry as part of the course requires that you complete set amount of hours working out over the summer period, and, you can go wherever you choose. In the past the college has sent students to the Highlands of Scotland, Cornwall and even Europe. Students have also gained work experience at Headingley Stadium and the Yorkshire County Cricket Ground. If you would rather stay closer to home then that is not a problem.

We also have excellent Links with Leeds Rugby club and there are regular trips to the Stadium where you will work alongside the head groundsman preparing the pitch for Leeds Rhinos and Carnegie matches.

Prospects from the course are good and many students have found work in the industry and in their particular area of interest. This qualification is a good way to get into practical employment and also middle management. With the right grades at the end of the course you can also further your studies and move onto a Foundation Degree.

Entry requirements

You will usually need at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (normally with English and mathematics at a minimum of grade D) or equivalent qualifications such as a First Diploma, National Certificate or NVQ Level 2 in a relevant subject.
