This course is for those working in Health, Social Service, Prison Service, Probation and Charitable Horticulture projects or those who intend to enter this area of work.

The course comprises five modules of study (60 hours per module). On average you will also need to study in your own time for 1-2 hours each week.

After the course there is an opportunity to progress to study for a Foundation Degree (for more information please visit www.thrive.org.uk) or take up employment. Employment prospects include, health, social service and charitable horticulture projects and prison service and probation and other community and educational projects.

Entry requirements

There are no prescriptive entry requirements but applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to study at this level. Experience of working in horticulture or in a therapeutic setting would be advantageous as would a qualification in horticulture or a care/health related subject.

If you do not have a horticultural qualification it would be advantageous to consider a part-time horticulture course.

A good plant dictionary is essential and it is recommended that you have a digital camera.

What you will study

  • Horticulture Principles and Practice
    Plant growth, plant propagation, plant establishment, growing media, plant maintenance, plant use and identification.
  • Understanding and Applying Therapies in Horticulture (delivered by York St. John University)
    Disabilities and their effect on a person, current provision for people with disabilities, basic counselling skills, therapeutic models and interventions, group work, treatment systems, allied professions, aims, definitions and terminology.
  • Horticulture as a Medium for Personal Change
    Frameworks and models, horticulture as a medium for therapy/rehabilitation, implications of a range of disabilities on plant selection and types of horticulture, modifications of crops/growing systems, relate processes and outcomes to other areas of therapy and treatment systems.
  • Enabling Access to Horticulture
    Plant selection according to client need, modification of systems, accessible environments, specialist techniques for enabling learning, psychological barriers.
  • Development and Management of a Programme
    Types of projects (production, maintenance, therapy), setting aims and objectives, management systems, recruitment of staff and participants, resource needs (staff, premises, materials, funding schedule of cropping/maintenance activities.

Assesment

Assessment will be continuous and will involve assignments based at College and at work, end of unit assessments and practical assessment where applicable.  There is a written assignment of approx. 2,000 words per module. There are no examinations.
