Accommodation

Askham BryanAccommodation and Catering

For some Students, coming to study with us will mean living away from home for the first time, and living in one of our halls of residence is an easy and effortless way of meeting people, making new friends and staying in touch with what’s going on throughout the College. The accommodation is all located within the main campus and is available for eligible students.

We can accommodate 299 students and there is a good mix of rooms, some with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, some en suite rooms with a shared snack kitchen and a small number of self-catering rooms with shared bathroom facilities.

There are a number of benefits to living-in at College:

  • The College Learning Resources Centre is currently open from 8:45am until 8.30pm Monday - Thursday, and from 8:45 until 5:00pm on Friday. It is also open from 12.45pm - 5.30pm on a Sunday.
  • Students have an opportunity to take part in the out-of-hours activities at College; the Students Union and Wardens organise a programme of sporting and social events during the year which students can take part in.
  • Students have an opportunity to develop their independence.
  • Students can become members of the college gym which now includes a brand new climbing wall.

In the evening there is a team of enrichment and safeguarding wardens who ensure the students are making the most of living in halls of residence and are there to deal with any situations that arise. The warden on duty carries a mobile telephone so that they can be contacted at all times. The telephone number is 07773 312617; this is published on all the student notice boards, along with the name and location of each warden and the duty warden’s rota. Our Safeguarding telephone number is available to call 24 hours a day for any serious concerns students or parents may have.

The bond can be paid by cheque, card or cash. Please make cheques payable to Askham Bryan College. We can not guarantee a specific room or room type but we will try to accommodate any preferences wherever possible.

Accommodation is offered for the academic year only and is subject to the terms and conditions of occupation which must be signed prior to the student moving into the room. Ways to Pay:

You can pay the accommodation fees in one of three ways:

  • Total in advance

Or

  • Termly i.e. in three instalments

Or

  • Monthly by standing order

No refund will be given if the accommodation is not used for any nights during the week; this includes any study tours or work experience that may be organised by the College or sickness causing the student to return home.

Leaving Accommodation:

If students withdraw from accommodation before the end of the academic year they will be required to pay the accommodation fee for the remainder of the year, unless the room is re-let to a student who is not already a College resident.

Additional Information

Please note pillows, duvets, bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery and pans are not provided in student accommodation. Students must provide their own bedding which must meet fire retardant standards (most modern duvets and pillows will meet these standards, please check the care label for this information). Bedding packs, which meet the regulations, can be purchased from the College; they include a single duvet, pillow, duvet cover and pillow case. An order form will be sent with the joining pack prior to enrolment.

There are two launderettes on site with self service commercial washing machines and dryers for use by the students.

Smoking

There is a strict no smoking policy at College. Students must not smoke in accommodation and must use the designated smoking areas within the college grounds.

Cleaning

All accommodation is cleaned twice a week and the bins emptied daily. The communal areas including stairs, bathrooms and kitchens are cleaned daily.

TV Licence

Remember, if you bring a TV you will need a licence which you can apply for once your hall name and number has been confirmed to you at the start of the year.

Weekends:

The College is required to comply with the Care Standards Act 2000 and is unable to provide accommodation at weekends to students who are under 18, unless they have specific course related duties to complete in which case they can be given permission to remain on site. You can discuss any specific requirements you may have with the Accommodation Manager or Student Support Manager.

There is a limited catering service provided at the weekend with brunch being served mid morning.

Holidays:

Please be aware that accommodation is for term time only. Students will not have access to their rooms outside published College term dates so during the holidays at Christmas, Easter and summer they will be asked to clear their rooms completely; they may be requested to vacate in the study weeks too. If their course requires them to attend a placement or other course related activity during the holiday and if their room is available they will be able to stay with the additional cost charged to the student for the time spent in accommodation.

Car Parking

Those students bringing cars, motorbikes or mopeds on site can do so free of charge but will need to register their vehicle on enrolment. Everyone with a vehicle on site is required to comply with the car parking and safe driving regulations.

Catering:

Students who are living in accommodation on a half board basis will have a combined ID and food card that will automatically be loaded with £30 per week. This can be used by the student to purchase their food on campus from the refectory or Deli Bar. They can also use cash to supplement their £30 if necessary. Any balance remaining on the food card at the end of term will not be refunded.
