British Horse Society Courses

The BHS exam system is still the foremost recognised qualifications in the equine industry. Askham Bryan College is an exam centre for BHS 'The Principles of Horse Management' and stage one, the College is also a ‘Where to Train’ centre to train candidates right up to BHSII Level. The Principles of Horse Management Course

This course is a seven weeks (with enrolment and taster evening) and is designed to develop confidence and enhance the horse owner's practical skills on the fundamentals of horse management, working towards the BHS Essential Horse Knowledge Certificate.

It appeals to a broad range of horse owners, from new owners to existing and returning owners who want to refresh and develop these essential skills. The overall aims of the course are to build horse owner's skills and confidence and to improve the health and welfare of horses. The course will consist of practical lectures on the  principles of horse health, correct feeding practices, basic first aid for the horse, effective grooming techniques and efficient stable management techniques.

Week one commences on Thursday 3 November with enrolment, induction and the first teaching session, this is then followed by intensive combined practical and informative theoretical horse management lectures.

Course starts: Thursday 7 September – 19 October 2017
Timings: 6pm - 8pm

British Horse Society (BHS) Stage One - Care

The BHS Stage One is a six week intensive evening preparation course which covers the stage one examination syllabus in addition to the practical and theory elements of the examination.

Course starts: Thursday 9 November - Thursday 14 December 2017.
Timings: 6pm - 8pm
Course Fee: £180


British Horse Society (BHS) Stage Two – Practical, Theoretical, Lunging and Ridden

The BHS Stage Two is a five week intensive evening preparation course which covers the stage two examination syllabus in addition to the practical and theory elements of the examination.

Course starts: Thursday 11 January - Thursday 8 February 2018
Thursday 22 February - Thursday 22 March 2018
Timings: 5.30pm - 8.30pm
Course Fee: £230: riding and care/stable management or £160: care/stable management 

Prerequisite: To have achieved BHS Stage One riding unit for ridden section or industry experience (pony club or riding club examinations), Ride under the BHS Welfare weight limit.

British Horse Society (BHS) PTT – Practical and Theoretical Preparation

The BHS Preliminary teaching course is a five week intensive evening preparation course which covers the stage PTT examination syllabus in addition to the practical and theory elements of the examination.

Course starts: Thursday 19 April - Thursday 24 May 2018.
Timings: 6pm - 8pm
Course Fee: £180

Prerequisite: To have achieved BHS Stage One complete, BHS Stage Two Care or industry experience (pony club or riding club examinations), Ride under the BHS Welfare weight limit
