Foundation Degree (FdSc) Management of Aquatics with Conservation of Oceans UCAS Code: D327
This programme covers the skills required to work both in the public aquarium sector and within zoos with a large number of aquatic systems. The programme also aims to discuss the concerns of conservation of the ocean and would be a great foundation for a career in ocean conservation. With a focus on the crossover between in situ and ex situ ocean conservation, as well as the ethics surrounding the keeping of aquatic livestock. Through the delivery of the programme it is hoped that knowledge of captive breeding and appropriate husbandry standards are carried forward in to the industry. The breeding and keeping of aquatic life is a rapidly developing industry, especially as global mind set is shifting towards conservation, with a focus on the ocean and threats it faces. *Subject to validation

In Course Costs
Students will be required to have PPE in the form of overalls, steal toe boots and a white lab coat before starting the course.
Also students are typically provided with the opportunity to take part in international study tours to a variety of locations. Previous study tours run by the University Centre include South Africa, Peru, Tenerife, Italy, Paris, London and Scotland.
This programme requires students to undertake 300 hours of work placement, with 150 completed each academic year.
Work placement is completed with an external provider which is arranged by the student. All work placements are subject to a health and safety check by the college to ensure that placements are suitable and safe. Support can be made available via the module tutor to help locate a suitable placement.
Assessments will be designed to give students the opportunity of performing tasks that they would be asked to do in employment. There are a range of assessment methods used, including reports, case studies, presentations and exams. Typically each module involves two assessments.
Applicants should have achieved 48 UCAS points plus 5 GCSEs including English, Maths and Science at grade C/4 or above. In addition applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of one year of Level 3 study and/or have significant industry experience. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted in lieu of GCSEs. An initial assessment process may be used to inform the College of your current status

On successful completion, students may wish to consider progressing onto one of the University Centre’s four top-up courses, allowing students to graduate with a BSc or BSc(Hons) degree.
Students alternatively may wish to consider careers in a variety of industries focused on aquarist, zoo keeping, ecological and or conservation work.
