VetSkill Level 5 Advanced Veterinary Nursing Diploma (Medical)
The new Advanced Medical Nursing programme is designed for qualified veterinary nurses wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in medical nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the RCVS day one competencies.
The course will require RVNs to complete practical skills and evidence of underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of a RVN within the medical nursing environment. Evidence based nursing and research is expected throughout this qualification to explore best practice and critically compare current processes.
The course will require attendance on a Friday for a duration of 34 weeks. This will provide students with support of balanced teaching methods including lectures, specialist speakers, practical sessions and peer reviewed presentations. The course will be assessed through written examinations, assignments, case reports and practical portfolio.
There are 7 modules that will need to be completed to achieve the full diploma, which include –
- Clinic Design and Biosecurity,
- Medical Pharmacology, Medical Disorders,
- Principles of Advanced Medical Oncological Nursing,
- Fundamentals of Anaesthesia and post anaesthetic Nursing for Medical conditions,
- Diagnostic Techniques for Medical Disorders and Practical Medical Nursing Skills.

Students must have current registered status with the RCVS, and their name must be recorded on the RCVS professional register of Veterinary Nurses.
