Apprenticeship Week Profile: Lea Poole
Date: 6th March 2019
From canines to cherry pickers, the career aspirations of 19 year old Lea Poole have changed dramatically.
Initially Lea’s thoughts of where her future lay centred on becoming a dog groomer. However, that has all changed and she is now part way through a Level 2 apprenticeship in construction plant maintenance at Askham Bryan College.
Said Lea: “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I have no regrets at all, quite the opposite. I can’t really remember why I wanted to be a dog groomer, but I did do a course for a year but then I had a trial at the construction industry suppliers Lifterz near Wakefield and absolutely loved it. I knew pretty much straight away that it was for me. It’s practical and hands on, and the mix of working and then the teaching sessions at Askham Bryan work really well.”
Lea is an apprentice at Lifterz, which hires and sells cherry pickers, platforms and scissor lifts. Her grandfather is the foreman there. Nowadays, words such as “Skyjack”, “Genie”, “Snorkel and Holland” have taken on new meanings for her – as manufacturers of platforms used in construction.
“I love taking things apart and putting them back together and what I do day to day in the workplace fits brilliantly with the assignments at college”, she said.
Kevin Riley, foreman at Lifterz said: “Lea’s assignments here are very varied – from welding to stripping down and repairing the machinery. We’re very pleased with her progression, she works hard and has a good understanding. I’m very proud of what she’s achieved.”
Lea’s home is near Wakefield.
