The Emerald Headingley ground staff were named OG ICL/Syngenta Professional Rugby Football League Grounds Team of the Year at the prestigious IOG Awards this week.

The IOG industry-wide Annual Awards, recognise the passion, dedication and challenges faced by grounds staff, volunteers and professionals across all levels of sport.

The ground staff team, which is headed up by head groundsman and former Askham Bryan College Groundskeeping student Ryan Golding look after the main pitch at Emerald Headingley which both professional Rugby clubs Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie play on, and the training pitches at Kirkstall.

Apprentice Joe Sutcliffe will be starting his Sports Turf Apprenticeship with Askham Bryan College on Monday with the Horticulture department while Groundskeeping Assistants Leon Pearson and Dan Connor have also completed apprenticeships and Level 2 qualifications with the college while working with for the Headingley clubs.

Now in its tenth year, the awards’ judging process recognises achievement, innovation and fresh thinking as well as examples of best practice from the leaders in the world of groundsmanship.
