Date: 15th October 2020
Students on Askham Bryan College’s Football and Education courses received a special guest visit from former professional footballer Enoch Showunmi as part of their nationally recognised BTEC qualification in partnership with Leeds United. Showunmi spoke about his journey from a non-league footballer studying for a Degree in Business, to full-time professional with two international caps with Nigeria to his name.
Speaking about the visit, Showumni said, “As someone who has taken the steps from university student to playing professionally, I know how beneficial it is to study alongside playing football. Football is a great vehicle for growth and developing yourself and supporting that with education gives you a platform to develop your interests and career further after retiring.”
“It’s always a pleasure to pass on my story and experiences to young students, the Leeds United College partnership is a great opportunity for young footballers to gain a fantastic foundation in education as they start their own journey into the game.”
During his 12-year professional career in football, Showunmi has played for Leeds United, Luton Town, Bristol City, Falkirk, Tranmere and Notts County. He earned an MSc in Finance from Leeds Beckett University whilst playing professionally, and now runs his own business in addition to mentoring students athletes in the United States and across the world.
