SHOWGROUND SUCCESS FOR YOUNG STOCKPERSON OF THE YEAR FINALIST
Date: 5th December 2017
A showground success for Askham Bryan College student awarded 2nd place at national Young Stockperson of the Year competition.
Katie Baines, in her first year of studying Level 3 Agriculture at the College, competed against nineteen other young stock enthusiasts at the annual Winter Stock Festival held at East of England Showground, Peterborough.
The livestock show’s Young Stock Person of the Year sees young agriculturists compete at shows throughout the summer and autumn to qualify for the Grand Final at the show in December, where some of the best young handlers in the country go head to head.
On Katie’s success, Section Leader for Agriculture at Askham Bryan College John Wray said: “We are extremely proud of Katie’s success at the Winter Stock Festival. She is a hard-working and dedicated student, who is enthusiastic about the industry and a fantastic representative of our department.”
Outside of her studies, Katie has her own herd of North Devonshire cattle which she regularly shows and is an active member of the UK Hereford Youth Society.
Katie said: “It’s great to have been awarded second place at the competition, competing against some of the best young stockpersons from across the nation. The practical experience I’ve gained from the course and from showing my own herd has really paid off!”
Following her success at the show, attended by some of the biggest names in the industry, Katie hopes to continue competing as part of the College and with her own herd in the new year.
