Young Agriculture and Equine students celebrated their animal handling skills at Askham Bryan’s Stockmanship Competition this month. The annual competition features beef, sheep, dairy and equine classes and is judged by a panel of industry experts. Students were assessed on their presentation, knowledge and handling of the animal, as well as personal presentation.

Jas Iveson won the Sheep Class earlier in the afternoon, before being awarded the winner of the overall ‘Stockperson of the Year’ for Agriculture, at the evening’s prize giving ceremony.
Congratulations also to Abigail Cutcliffe, who won the In-hand Show Cob Class, and then claimed the Equine Stockperson of the Year title.

Tim Whitaker, Campus Principal of Askham Bryan College, spoke of his pride in the skills displayed by the students. He said: “It’s no mean feat to train and show an animal to the standard which our students have achieved, I’m very proud of the professionalism and commitment shown by our students in the preparation of their animals for stockmanship.”

The Stockmanship Competition is designed to show students exactly what is involved in getting an animal ready for show, whether they are from a livestock, arable or non-farming background. The students are in charge of diet, exercise and grooming and in the case of those showing the livestock, they also have to train their animal to walk on a halter, which is not an easy task.
