Introduction to Animal Nursing and Welfare (Level 2 and 3 Combined)


Askham Bryan College is an approved centre for vocational training for veterinary nursing. With high quality facilities, teaching and learning, the sites have practical and theoretical expertise to provide learners with an outstanding experience that will equip them to meet the needs of current industrial clinical practice. Whilst studying with us you will have access to a range of companion and exotic species via the Animal Management facility. This will provide you with unique opportunities to develop practical skills of handling and health assessment for these animals.


This one year Level 3 course combines a Level 3 Certificate in Practical Animal Care with a Certificate in Animal Nursing at Level 2. The combined programme enables students to develop underpinning knowledge of the physiological workings of the animal in addition to basic health care and the treatment and prevention of disease.

A small portfolio of work-related skills forms part of the assessment of this course, along with examinations, tests, assignments, presentations and practical assessments. Students must also undertake a work placement in a veterinary practice, should students wish to be considered for the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing work experience must be undertaken in a veterinary practice.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (old GCSE grading C or above) to include English Language, Maths or Science, plus two weeks of work experience with suitable references in any animal related placement. Where a student has completed a previous Level 2 qualification e.g. Animal Management, they must have achieved a Merit grade.

Students will be required to demonstrate their fitness to practise including the disclosure of any criminal convictions that may affect registration with the RCVS as qualified veterinary nurses.

Further Study

Successful graduates of this course can apply to complete the City and Guilds Technical Diploma in Animal Management, or for those that have secured either employment of an apprenticeship position in a veterinary practice, they can apply to study the level 3 Diploma Veterinary Nursing course.
