KEEP ON MOVING These courses are designed for anyone who is interested in design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of land-based machines and vehicles.
At Askham Bryan College students have the opportunity to study several different strands of engineering technology; Land-Based Technology, Construction Plant Maintenance and Highways Maintenance. These are highly technical sectors with an expanding workforce so there are strong employment prospects.
Land-Based Engineering provides a wide range of opportunities for students who are interested in machinery and enjoy working with technology. Our extensive facilities provide a fantastic environment for practical work and demonstrations, where students learn what makes off-road vehicles and land-based machinery work, as well as the testing, repair and maintenance of vehicles. Students will learn to operate a range of off-road vehicles as well as benefiting from industry links allowing them to gain invaluable real-life training.
Construction Plant Maintenance
Construction Plant Maintenance courses offer our students the chance to get hands-on and learn the skills which keep Plant Machinery and equipment, both small and large, in tip-top condition. Our world would grind to a halt without these skills, which are invaluable across a wide range of industries.
Our workshops include two specialist plant machinery workshops, five motor vehicle workshops, four land-based machinery workshops and a welding workshop, all of which provide students with a range of facilities incorporating specialist tooling and diagnostic equipment. Learning resources include a range of tractors and farm machines, lift trucks, harvesting machinery and application equipment as well as a wide selection of small and medium plant machinery. These facilities, combined with our close links with industry means that we provide our students with access to the very latest equipment. Our lecturers have extensive industry experience and we are the training provider for nationally recognised hire companies.
By studying in this department you will learn the relevant skills to work in the following roles:
The Engineering department has links within the industry across the whole spectrum of its provision, including manufacturers, dealerships, utilities companies, councils, hire companies and independent repairers. Our main partners for Plant-Based Engineering are VP plc, Speedy Hire, Chippendale Plant and Stihl, and for Land-Based Technology they are Sumo, Amazon and Krone.
Apprenticeships and work placements are an essential part of our students’ learning. Placements have been undertaken with the following companies by our students: Wilfred Scruton Ltd, Farmstar Ltd, Moorland ATV, Kirklees Council, Russells Farm Machinery, Lloyds of Bishop Auckland, Rolawn, Paxtons, Metcalfe Farms, Franks Curtis Machinery, Brian Robinson Machinery, Peacock and Binnington, RBM tractors, Ripon Farm Machinery and many more.
