Take your first steps on the career ladder and study a Level 1 Land-Based Programme with us. We focus on practical skills, but we will also develop your academic skills over the year.

We offer courses in Agriculture, Animal Care, Horse Care and Horticulture.
LEVEL 1 AGRICULTURE
WE’RE COMMITTED TO THE FUTURE OF FARMING. This study programme is designed for anyone with a love of farming and interest in animal and crop production. You will get the opportunity to get hands-on at our farm on the College grounds. You will be able to develop your skills by doing milking duties, organising the cattle through the calving season and assisting in the lambing and sheep management. There will be opportunities to learn in the Beef Unit, understand the new electronic milking procedures, take part in a Stockmanship competition and visit Agricultural shows and Machinery producers.
LEVEL 1 ANIMAL CARE
TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE! Rabbits, Armadillos, Marmosets, Degus, Snakes, Ducks, Parrots, Ferrets. Meerkats, Tarantulas, Chickens, Goats, Geckoes, Turtles, Bearded Dragons, Tropical Fish… This course is designed for anyone with an interest in the care and welfare of animals. You will spend time in the Animal Unit and within the Wildlife Park, getting hands-on experience with the animals – feeding, cleaning and looking after them. Other sessions will be spent learning about the characteristics and needs of the animals and how to care for them.
LEVEL 1 HORSE CARE
TAKE THE REINS. This course is designed for anyone who loves working with and caring for horses. There will be opportunities for you to really get out there into the equine world and experience all different areas of the industry. You will have weekly riding sessions along with practical tasks with the college horses every day. Practical skills involved include: grooming, tacking up, and general health care of the horse in addition to job preparation skills. Other sessions will be spent learning about the characteristics and needs of the horses and how to care for them.
LEVEL 1 HORTICULTURE
JOIN THE GROWING INDUSTRY. This course is designed for anyone with a passion for looking after and growing flowers and plants. You will get the chance to develop a huge range of horticultural skills such as landscaping planting, seed sowing plant division and horticultural construction and maintenance. Throughout the course you will experience lots of different horticultural work environments such as woodland skills, developing local nature reserves and community projects.
Your Qualification
You will attend College for a minimum of 3 days per week and upon completion of your programme you will achieve a Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies from City and Guilds. There will be no formal exams! You will collect a portfolio of evidence during the course. Each unit will be continually assessed throughout the study programme. Assessments will be spread out during the year and will be either written, oral practical individual or group work.
Employability and Personal Development
We will help you develop skills that employers are looking for and also improve your personal performance. 24 hours of work experience in a setting that’s relevant to your qualification will add to your transferable skills.
English and maths
If you have not already achieved a level 4 English and maths GCSE, you will continue to work towards these qualifications at a level that is appropriate for you. You will either be studying Functional Skills from Entry 1 – Level 1 or be in a GCSE class.
Entry Requirements
Entry Level 3 or above or level 1 Stepping Stone or equivalent qualifications or GCSEs at grades 1-2 (F-G)
Progression
You can move onto level 2 Stepping Stone or full Level 2
