Sport - Level 3 Sports Coaching Course Manager

What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

Sport is all I have known since a young age so it was an obvious choice for me to progress as a player into coaching and management. My main reason for becoming a course manager was to pass on knowledge and experience to students and challenge and inspire them to become better coaches and also better people.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the college?

I enjoy the mix of theory and practical. Being in the classroom in the morning and the sports hall, gym or pitch in the afternoon works well for myself and the students. The facilities we have here at the college are getting better all the time and with the 4g pitch coming next year, it will be a great resource to have.

Areas of Interest and Expertise

My areas of interest and expertise are football and sports coaching, mentoring, nutrition and fitness.

What’s your favourite sport to teach or play and why?

I love football. I have been playing football since the age of 5 and went on to be a professional player for 9 years and also represented my country at under 16 and under 18 levels. I went into coaching and managing following my playing career. Since joining Askham Bryan, I have started to teach across a lot more sports and I am enjoying badminton and pickleball currently.

What advice would you give to students looking to succeed in your subject area?

My advice is to get some national governing body qualifications for your sports of interest alongside your education and look to gain some experience of coaching at all levels. Put yourself out there and work hard.

If your students had to describe you in three words, what would they say?

Funny, Sarcastic, knowledgeable

What book, movie, artist or podcast do you always recommend?

I would recommend the movie ‘Coach Carter’.
