What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I’ve always loved animals, and have only ever wanted to pursue a career in the zoo industry. I have a BSc (Hons) in animal management and have 10+ years experience in various zoological collections, mostly with the bird sections. Birds are my absolute favourite. They are so delightful to work with and bring so much joy.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the college?

I love the range of animal work I get myself involved in, and passing on amazing bird knowledge.

Areas of Interest and Expertise

I am interested in bird of prey health and husbandry and avian evolution.

What advice would you give to students looking to succeed in your subject area?

My advice is to get as much experience as possible out in collections. Practical work with animals is sometimes more valuable than a qualification to your name.

What book, movie, artist or podcast do you always recommend?

The book ’10 Birds that Changed the World’ by Stephen Moss. It’s incredible how certain bird species have shaped human history and culture.

The podcast ‘Zookeeper 101’. You really get to appreciate how zoo leader’s backgrounds and experiences can evolve collections and animal populations.

And the film ‘Fly Away Home’. A tear jerker, but wow, birds are clever!

If your students had to describe you in three words, what would they say?

Chill, funny, passionate.
