More than 300 competitors set to ride into Askham Bryan College for prestigious Horse Trials

Askham Bryan College is preparing to welcome more than 300 horse and rider combinations when its annual British Eventing Horse Trials return on 10 and 11 October.

The popular affiliated competition, which attracts competitors from across the country, will see riders tackle dressage, showjumping and cross-country phases across a range of classes from BE80 to Novice level. Spectator entry is free, making it a perfect opportunity for local residents to enjoy top-class equestrian sport in the Yorkshire countryside.

Organised by Flo Clarkson, Head of Agriculture and Equine, and Shaun Malpass, Equine Yard Manager, the event continues a proud equestrian tradition at the College that began in 2010. Since taking the reins in 2023, the pair have overseen the event’s continued growth and success.

British Eventing Technical Advisor for the competition, Sarah Verney, praised both the quality of the course and the reputation the event has built within the sport.

“It is a fantastic event, with a great cross-country course. European Champion, Olympic Team Gold Medallist and dual Badminton and Burghley winner Ros Canter was very impressed when she brought some young horses last year. It is a great event which attracts some of the best riders in the country; it’s very well run with a friendly, welcoming team. A great way to spend a day out in the beautiful countryside surrounding Askham Bryan College.”

The Horse Trials are a true whole-college effort, showcasing collaboration across a range of curriculum areas. Agriculture students and staff help prepare the land and grounds, Equine students assist with fence preparation and event set-up, while Floristry students create decorative displays to welcome competitors and visitors.

Throughout the weekend, students gain valuable hands-on industry experience by supporting the event through stewarding, fence judging and a variety of operational roles.

“The weekend is a highlight of the year for us. It takes a huge team effort to deliver, and it’s rewarding to see our students playing such an important role in a successful competition.”

With elite riders, exciting competition and stunning countryside surroundings, the event promises an enjoyable day out for equestrian enthusiasts and families alike.

Admission is free and spectators are welcome on both days.
