Askham Bryan College and University of York Launch Joint CPD Programme for Agricultural Professionals
26th October 2026
New short courses combine cutting-edge research and practical expertise to help land-based businesses make informed decisions for the future.
Askham Bryan College and the University of York have joined forces to develop and deliver a new programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses designed to support farmers, land managers and agricultural professionals as they navigate the opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
Bringing together the University of York’s research expertise with Askham Bryan College’s longstanding reputation for land-based education and industry engagement, the programme will provide practical, evidence-based learning that can be applied directly within agricultural and rural businesses.
The first courses focus on two areas attracting growing attention across the industry: the role of soil microbiology in improving productivity, profitability and resilience, and the commercial realities of anaerobic digestion as a potential diversification and renewable energy opportunity.
Rather than promoting one-size-fits-all solutions, the courses are designed to help participants critically evaluate emerging technologies and management approaches, understand the latest scientific developments, and assess what is right for their own businesses.
From exploring how biological processes influence crop and livestock performance to understanding the practical and financial considerations of anaerobic digestion systems, learners will gain valuable insights that support informed decision-making and long-term business sustainability.
Dr Libby Clements, Head of Land-Based Higher Education at Askham Bryan College, said:“Agriculture is evolving rapidly, and there is a growing need for professional development opportunities that combine robust research with practical application. These courses have been designed to give land-based professionals access to the latest knowledge, insights and evidence, while helping them consider what these innovations mean for their own businesses.
Working in partnership with the University of York allows us to bring together academic expertise and industry experience to create learning opportunities that are both relevant and impactful for the sector.”
Anna Hastie, Head of Professional Education and Skills at the University of York, said: βWeβre delighted to be working with Askham Bryan College to bring the Universityβs research expertise to agricultural professionals in a practical and accessible way. By connecting the latest scientific thinking with the real challenges facing farmers and land managers, these courses will help participants make informed decisions, explore new opportunities and consider how innovation can support the long-term productivity, resilience and sustainability of their businesses. This partnership reflects our commitment to working with industry to turn knowledge into meaningful impact.β
The new CPD programme reflects a shared commitment from both institutions to support innovation, productivity and sustainability across agriculture and the wider land-based industries.
