This qualification is aimed at learners who enjoy working with plants and outside in green spaces. It is suitable for those who are considering a career in horticulture or who wish develop their horticultural skills for their own personal interest.

This course is delivered at our York Campus as follows:

This course will commence in the week beginning 15 September 2025 and complete in the week beginning 22 June 2026.

Key Information
This is a practical course with some classroom-based learning to provide underpinning theoretical knowledge.
Topic include:
- Botanical naming and plant identification
- Propagation by seed and cuttings
- Soil health and soil management
- Care and maintenance of planted areas
- Garden design and planning
The course is assessed by a portfolio of evidence, including some written assignments compiled throughout the programme, which provides evidence of the skills developed.
Please note that for practical courses, learners are required to provide steel toe-capped safety boots, suitable gloves and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions.
No formal qualifications.
Applicants are expected to show a keen interest in horticulture.
On successful completion of the City and Guilds L2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills, you may progress to other related qualifications, such as the RHS Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development or the City and Guilds L3 Certificate in Horticulture.
