As the most comprehensive introduction to horticulture we offer, this two-year course – equivalent to A-levels – equips you with the skills needed for various job roles in the sector or higher education. The programme splits practical learning and theory 40/60, respectively. Areas of study include plant identification, propagation, surveying, garden design, hard-landscaping and soil science.

at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above, to include 2 from English, Maths or Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Key Information
The course is an exciting combination of practical and theory work, both of which will provide you with the skills to enter any aspect of the industry. The course can also lead to degree level study or a career in an entry level management position. The course content offers a professional level of knowledge and understanding of modern horticulture combined with hands-on practical skills.
This is a two year course which leads to the achievement of the Technical Advanced Extended Diploma in Horticulture.
The central subjects covered over the two years include plant and soil science, plant identification and use, amenity turf, machinery use and maintenance, estate skills, tree and shrub pruning, establishing exterior plant displays, plant propagation, site surveys, landscape and garden design, landscape construction, business and project management. In total there are eighteen 60-credit units assessed through written and practical work.

Students who successfully complete this course could progress onto studies for a higher education qualification such as a Foundation Degree in Horticulture, Landscape and Garden Management, Sports Surface Management or Arboriculture, then onto a top-up BSc Hons Degree in Applied Horticulture.

Progression and Development Sessions
All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.
Students are to complete a minimum of 150 hours in their first year and 315 hours in their second year of study. (Some students may opt to complete the 315 hours in their first year, this will be discussed during induction)
Typically these include: nurseries, garden centres, stately homes, landscape contractors and research institutions.
You will need to buy steel toe capped boots, work clothes and basic stationery.
In the second year you will also need technical drawing tools. Exacting advice on this will be available on the course.
Some of the trips and visit will require you to provide a nominal entrance fee.
