Qualification Information

This qualification provides the recognised training and certification required for the safe and responsible use of professional pesticides. It demonstrates competence in pesticide handling and application, helping users meet legal requirements across agriculture, horticulture, and related industries.

Key Information

Overview

The PA1 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides is the mandatory foundation unit for anyone wishing to apply professional pesticides. Training and the online PA1 assessment are completed on the first day of the course.

The PA2A Award is designed for those applying pesticides using self-propelled, mounted, or trailed horizontal boom sprayers.

Training may be delivered using either a quad boom sprayer or tractor-mounted sprayer, subject to availability. Candidates must have prior experience driving the relevant vehicle, as trainers and assessors may postpone training or assessment if further experience is required.

Course Content – PA1

  • Know the legislative requirements and codes of practice relating to the use of Outcome 2.
  • Understand the relevance of product information
  • Know how to minimise the risk of human contamination and implement emergency procedures
  • Know how to store and transport pesticides safely
  • Know how to manage and dispose of surplus pesticide and waste materials
  • Know the record keeping requirements
  • Know how to minimise the risk of environmental contamination and implement emergency procedures

Course Content – PA2a

  • Know the legislative and safety regulations relating to application equipment]
  • Be able to assess the environmental factors relating to the mixing and application site
  • Be able to read and interpret product information
  • Be able to prepare and calibrate the applicator
  • Be able to operate the application equipment
  • Know how to carry out post-operational procedures

Entry Requirements

Candidates must first achieve PA1 (City & Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides) before they can be assessed on PA2.

The minimum age limit for Candidates taking Certificates of Competence is 16 years. There is no upper age limit. Please note that this qualification requires candidates to carry out calculations as part of the assessment.

Important Information

City and Guilds will no longer produce physical skills card upon a successful completion of this accreditation. Candidates can expect to receive a digital skills card which they will be able to access through their online portal. The training centre will be unable to send or provide this upon completion. All candidates will also need to provide ID on the day of their assessment as proof of identification. Failure to do this may result in your assessment being suspended.

This course combines the PA1 and PA2a qualifications. PA1 training and assessment are delivered on Monday, followed by PA2a training on Thursday and Friday. The schedule is designed to fit around our PA6 course, which is typically held on Tuesday and Wednesday, enabling delegates to maximise their training opportunities throughout the week.
