Department Overview
Our adult learning provision is designed to be flexible, accessible and relevant to the job market of today. We welcome adult learners from all backgrounds and offer guidance to help you choose the right level of study based on your experience, qualifications and ambitions.
Courses are available across a variety of subject areas, with options to study full time, part time or through short, skills-focused programmes.
Adult Courses for Local Learners
Our adult courses are ideal for learners looking for local education opportunities in York and across Yorkshire via our other learning centres at Middlesbrough, Gateshead, Wakefield and Saltaire. With on-campus teaching, practical facilities and strong transport links, Askham Bryan College provides accessible adult learning close to home.

Adults who are aged 19+ are welcome to apply for our Further Education courses, including Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications.
- Level 2 qualifications are equivalent to GCSE-level study
- Level 3 qualifications are equivalent to A Levels or BTEC qualifications
Our Further Education courses provide a strong foundation for employment, career progression or progression to higher education. Applications are made through our online application form, and we will discuss the most suitable level of study with you at interview.

At University Centre Askham Bryan, adult learners can progress to degree-level study in animal and agriculture-related subjects. If you already hold Level 3 qualifications (or equivalent), higher education may be the right next step for you.
Degree courses offer opportunities to deepen subject knowledge, develop progressive skills and improve long-term career prospects.

We offer a wide selection of short courses and part-time learning opportunities, ideal for adults balancing education with work or personal commitments.

Devolved Area Funding
If you are a student over the age of 19 applying from a devolved area you may be subject to different course fees. Devolved areas around Askham Bryan include: York and North Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, North of Tyne, South Yorkshire, Tees Valley and West Yorkshire.

Advanced Learner Loan
If you are thinking about studying a Level 3 to Level 5 further education course at Askham Bryan College, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan.
These loans have been introduced by the Government to help you pay for your college tuition fees. From August 2016 most learners aged 19 and over studying at Level 3 and above will qualify.
- You can take out a loan to pay all your course fees or just part – it’s your choice
- Your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check
- The loan goes straight to the college to pay for your fees
- You will not pay anything back until your income is £25,000 or over (courses starting on or after 1 August 2023)
How do I Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan?
Please contact Student Records on 01904 772277 before you apply, and request a Learning and Funding Information Letter which will help you complete the application form.
When you have your Learning and Funding Information Letter, you can start your application by completing this application form or go to Student Finance England.Â
