University Centre Askham Bryan Veterinary Nursing Article to Feature in The Veterinary Journal

A Veterinary Nursing article from University Centre Askham Bryan has been accepted for publication in The Veterinary Journal (Volume 310), scheduled for release in August 2025.

The article, titled “Inducing and Measuring Positive Affective State in Domesticated Equines: A Delphi Consultation”, explores the outcomes of a Delphi consultation, an iterative process used to reach consensus on complex issues.

This study identified a range of potential techniques for promoting positive emotional states (positive affective welfare) in horses, as well as methods for measuring these states through both behavioural cues and physiological indicators. The findings provide a valuable foundation for future empirical research in equine emotional welfare.

Loni Loftus, Postgraduate Lecturer at University Centre Askham Bryan, commented:
“This study is the first of its kind to involve a broad range of equine professionals in a large-scale effort to gather collective insights on equine welfare. It offers vital guidance for advancing future research aimed at improving emotional wellbeing in horses.”
