Charlotte Jacques-Smith

Sport and UPS - Course Manager Level 1 and 2

What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I was inspired at school and through my degree programme by inspirational teachers and lecturers. With a love for sport, I wanted to be that same role model I had during my years in education.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the college?

I really enjoy the college environment, working with friendly and helpful colleagues and students who have a willingness to learn.

Areas of Interest and Expertise

Outside of my role at Askham Bryan College I am a football referee operating in the Women’s National League. Being a referee enables me to learn and develop transferable skills that are beneficial in all aspects of my life. It allows me to gain new experiences/skills and meet new people. Within my role at college, I have also been able to use refereeing to share my experiences with staff and students and hopefully inspire them to try something new.

What’s your favourite sport to teach or play and why?

At the moment, my favourite sport to play and teach is pickleball. It’s an inclusive sport which allows all abilities to play. It is sociable and fun.

What advice would you give to students looking to succeed in your subject area?

My advice is to take every opportunity that is given to you. Make the most of your college/university years especially with the support from teachers. Be open to feedback and development.

If your students had to describe you in three words, what would they say?

Understanding, helpful and patient.

What book, movie, artist or podcast do you always recommend?

I don’t have a specific one, I do love a good Christmas film as that is my favourite time of the year. Colleen Hoover’s books I really enjoy.
