Horticulture - Curriculum Team Leader
What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
My passion for horticulture began with a deep appreciation for the natural world and its ability to enrich lives. I was inspired to pursue a career in Further Education because I wanted to share that passion and help others develop sustainable careers. Horticulture is not just about plants itβs about creativity, science, and environmental responsibility. Teaching in FE allows me to empower learners to connect with nature, embrace innovation, and contribute to a greener future.
What do you enjoy most about your role at the college?
I mostly enjoy my role as a Curriculum Team Leader in Further Education because I believe education has the power to transform lives. Working in FE allows me to support diverse learners, many of whom are taking second chances or exploring new opportunities. I wanted to lead a team that not only delivers high-quality teaching but also creates an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and motivated to achieve their goals. Seeing learners progress and succeed is what drives me every day.

What is your favourite plant and why?
My favourite plant is Aloe Vera. Itβs practical, beautiful, and has a rich history in herbal medicine. Plus, itβs easy to grow indoors, making it relatable and impressive.

Finally, never underestimate the importance of passion. Horticulture is hard work, but if you love what you do, every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow. Stay motivated, keep learning, and remember that your skills contribute to a greener, healthier future.
If your students had to describe you in three words, what would they say?
Supportive, Knowledgeable, Inspiring.
What book, movie, artist or podcast do you always recommend?
For books, I recommend ‘The Botany of Desire’ by Michael Pollan. The book explores the fascinating relationship between humans and plants through history and culture.
As for movies, ‘Greenfingers’ (2001) . This is based on a true story about prisoners finding redemption through horticulture.
Lastly, a great podcast is ‘The Joe Gardener Show’ This deep dives into sustainable gardening and horticultural techniques.
Anything else?
I bring a diverse set of skills and passions that enrich my professional and personal life. I study herbalism, which reflects my deep connection to plants and natural health giving me knowledge about the healing properties of herbs and sustainable practices. In addition, I am a certified yoga teacher, this has taught me the importance of balance, patience, and resilience, qualities that I also apply when leading teams and supporting learners. My interest in holistic living complements my work in education, as I believe in nurturing both the mind and body for overall success. Whether I am guiding students through horticultural techniques or encouraging colleagues to embrace innovation, my goal is always to inspire and empower. Combining education, wellness, and sustainability, I strive to create learning environments that prepare individuals not only for careers but for healthier, more mindful lives.
