Deputy Animal Sciences, Conservation and Associated Enterprises Manager

What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I have worked within the zoo industry for almost 17 years at various collections up and down the country and abroad, the species that I have enjoyed working with the most include Red Pandas, Sealions, Penguins, Tapir and larger carnivores – I am very vocationally driven and I love what I do.

I have always wanted to pursue a career with animals from a young age so I’ve always tailored my studies towards that end goal and gained as much experience as I could to get there. It’s important we look after the planet and all the species that live there, it’s our job create a better future for everyone!

What do you enjoy most about your role at the college?

I enjoy cross-team collaboration and working to train and inspire the next generation of animal keepers and conservationists. It brings me so much joy to watch them thrive and reminds me of a younger version of myself starting out in industry. We need to invest in the next generation and teach those all important industry skills.

What is your favourite animal and why?

I love the Otters – they’re an intelligent small carnivore with loads of personality – they’re also important in terms of conservation and I think they’re a great species for the students to work with!

Areas of Interest and Expertise

I love mammals, I line manage the zoo team specifically and small carnivores hold a special place in my heart! I also enjoy presenting and working with the media to showcase our facilities. If you need someone to deliver passion and a love for our industry, that is what I do!

What advice would you give to students looking to succeed in your subject area?

My advice is gain as much experience as you can, and try different things, even if it may feel a little out of your comfort zone. Working in this industry requires adaptability, it is ever changing and you need resilience. Ask lots of questions and trust your instincts. Remember, we are here to help and guide you!

What book, movie, artist or podcast do you always recommend?

I love feel-good music that puts you in good spirits! I always have a motivational playlist on in the mornings that gets me ready for the day!

If your students had to describe you in three words, what would they say?

Positive, Encouraging, Ambitious

Anything else?

I am also a BIAZA Accredited Screener which means I go out to other zoo’s and screen them against important criteria linking to husbandry, welfare, conservation and education.
