Equestrian College Courses
The best way to be successful is to study something that you enjoy!
With excellent facilities and experienced highly qualified staff, complemented by many links with industry specialists, Askham Bryan College students have a range of opportunities for progression and development within the equine industry.
The College hosts events throughout the year including our well known British Eventing Horse Trials held in October which allows our students to get first-hand experience of preparing, planning and engaging in our range of equine events.
FACILITIES
The Equestrian Centre, based at Askham Bryanโs York campus, has an indoor arena measuring 70m x 30m, an outdoor school measuring 60m x 25m in addition to three indoor yards. These areas offer stabling for up to 50 horses. There is also access to our rider fitness suite, simulated riding devices and a range of technology devices for the collection and development of data. Our facilities are available to hire to members of the public outside of college hours, meaning there are an array of clinics and competitions onsite most evenings and weekends.
Our Equine tutors have a range of specialist qualifications and current subject-area knowledge and international experience. We have a variety of horses which our students work with to suit their individual learning needs, whether it be for practical or riding sessions, all of our horses are fully approved through our riding school license, with links to vets and the local council. We are therefore able to accommodate varying riding ability and ensure a positive learning environment.
We are a BHS accredited centre who offers ongoing BHS exam training both within and outside of curriculum. We have dedicated BHS assessors and managers on site to assist in development and progression, meeting our accredited status.
Our department boasts a range of classrooms and learning spaces, all of which house a range of computers and interactive screens to enhance learner experience.
At Askham Bryan College, horse welfare is at the heart of everything we do. Our equine facilities operate in line with the British Horse Society (BHS) welfare standards, ensuring that every horse receives the highest level of care. Student participation in daily yard duties is essential to maintaining these standards, as it provides hands-on experience in feeding, grooming, health checks, and stable management. By engaging in the day to day running of the yard, learners develop practical skills and a deep understanding of welfare principles, preparing them for careers where responsible horse care is paramount.
To meet these needs of the horse, we facilitate a regular turnout plan in our equine paddocks, which all have equine safe fencing, perimeters and access to fresh water and constant forage. We ensure horses are grouped accordingly to meet the guidelines of the five domains in equine welfare.
We are firm believers that horses should be horses and in line with this, we ensure our horses are taken off college grounds during holiday periods to have some down time, with the opportunity of living as naturally as possible.
We offer a structured work plan for our horses, matching their ability, age, and fitness level. This will range from rehab work through to flat work, jumping, and hacking.
Please visit our finance page for further details on the most recent scholarships and bursaries we can offer.
As part of the curriculum at Askham Bryan College, all learners are required to complete a set number of work placement hours with a business within the equine industry.
These placements provide invaluable hands-on experience, allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge in real world settings and gain insight into professional practices. Working in a different environment outside of college helps broaden their understanding of the sector, develop practical skills, and build essential connections that enhance future career opportunities.
Askham Bryan College has a strong relationship with The British Horse Society, as part of our center’s accreditation. The department also offer a range of equine events, whether it be dressage or show jumping clinics at our Centre.
Every year we hold affiliated British Eventing Horse Trials which students are a huge part of in the run up to and the running of the event. This gives students the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals, gain positive links with suppliers and contractors, as well as meeting and working alongside event sponsors and traders. These events play a vital part of the curriculum, linking business and events management modules.

โAskham Bryan College is a fantastic college. It has been a pleasure learning here. All the tutors are willing to go above and beyond to ensure you have the best knowledge possible. I would recommend this college to anyone wanting to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. โ
Ryanโs Story
โChoosing the level 3 Arboriculture course was a big decision being a 31-year-old self-employed landscape gardener. I am now at the end of my first year and there is no looking back. I have come on leaps and bounds professionally. I have already expanded my business into arboriculture with the skills and knowledge I have learnt. Askham Bryan College has been an eye opener and I've learned skills that I will take through my entire life.โ
